Safety Begins with Awareness: A Look at OSHA’s Outreach

In order for one to follow the law, they should first be made aware of the law.

Creating awareness of the OSH Act 88:08 is one of the main goals guiding the Occupational Safety and Health Agency’s (OSHA’s) Outreach team. In fact, it is hoped that increased awareness can set off a domino effect that enables increased compliance leading to safer and healthier workplaces. This knowledge building translates to the ultimate goal of employees returning safely to their homes and loved ones.

Over the last few months, OSHA’s Outreach activities have shown steady growth due to an increasing number of requests from various industrial estates (IEs). Over the 6-month period of April to September 2025, the Agency received 31 outreach requests, out of which 29 different outreach activities were executed. These requests came from a range of sectors including government ministries, financial services, oil and gas, public sector and business associations.

Here is a breakdown of the Outreach events supported:

  • 6 Health Fairs
  • 5 Career Days
  • 2 Speeches
  • 9 In-person presentations
  • 5 Virtual presentations
  • 1 Food & Beverage Trade Show
  • 1 Panel Discussion

OSHA’s Outreach team is made up of their Inspectorate and Communications and Outreach Departments. Together, they have interacted with hundreds of employees and members of the public, distributed hundreds of brochures and answered countless questions. Some of the popular topics of concern include:

  • “If I am injured while at work do I have to wait for my employer to contact OSHA?”
  • “If in keeping with the OSH Act, a charge is laid for a breach, who is charged: the employee, the person in charge or the organization?”
  • “Who can and how can one refuse to work?”
  • “How can one get the needed information about the OSH Act and the protections offered to employees?”

As the Agency heads into the new financial year, it is expected that this rise in Outreach requests will continue as the local community shows a growing interest in being reliably informed.
