OSHA hosts session at the Port of Spain General Hospital on the importance of a safety and health committee

On Wednesday 22nd January, 2025, the Occupational Safety and Health Agency (OSHA) held an informative session focused on the essential requirements and importance of establishing a safety and health committee within the workplace. The event, which took place at the Port of Spain General Hospital, drew a crowd of 24 attendees, including employees from varying organisational levels.

The presentation, delivered by Ms. Stacey Ann Marshall; a safety and health inspector I at the Agency; highlighted the critical role that safety and health committees play in ensuring a safe and compliant work environment. Participants were educated on key aspects such as the committee’s structure, the responsibilities of members, and how such committees can proactively address and mitigate potential hazards in the workplace. Ms. Marshall emphasized that these committees serve as a crucial resource for fostering collaboration between employers and employees in maintaining health and safety standards.

In addition to the informative session, a representative from the Communications and Outreach department was present to engage with the audience via the distribution of branded merchandise, including brochures and stationary.

The session provided valuable insights and practical tips for implementing and sustaining an effective safety and health committee, and it proved to be an excellent opportunity for networking and sharing ideas. OSHA continues to encourage organisations to prioritize safety and health through the establishment of such committees to foster a culture of safety in every workplace.

This session was part of a broader initiative by OSHA to enhance public outreach and increase awareness of workplace safety standards. Participants left with a renewed understanding of their roles in maintaining safe work environments.
