OSHA Hosts National Consultation on Safety Considerations for the Use of Display Screens

The Occupational Safety and Health Agency (OSHA) has taken a decisive step towards modernising workplace safety standards with the hosting of a Public Stakeholder Consultation, on Monday 15 September 2025, aimed at shaping draft policy for Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Regulations.

More than sixty (60) stakeholders joined the hybrid session, both online and in-person, representing a wide cross-section of Trinidad and Tobago’s workforce such as government ministries, trade unions, educational institutions, private sector employers, service providers, audio-visual engineers, safety and health professionals, as well as interested members of the public.

In order to ensure the DSE Regulations remain aligned to the use of technology and the adequate protection of employees’ health and well-being, all contributions were recorded for the integration and inclusion into the final policy document. Some of the recommendations received from the participants included: eye testing requirements, ergonomic standards for chairs and workstations, the incorporation of display screen equipment into risk assessments and the need for clearer definitions of technical terms to define the habitual and frequent use of DSE at the workplace.

The final version of the policy document will be submitted to Cabinet through the Ministry of Labour, Small and Micro Enterprise Development. Afterward, once approval is granted, it will be forwarded to the Office of the Chief Parliamentary Counsel to facilitate the drafting of DSE legislation. It is important that the regulations are specific and robust, to accommodate the prevalent use of DSE across different work environments. Additionally, the Agency extends sincere thanks to all participants for their invaluable contributions and reaffirms its commitment to an inclusive, transparent and evidence-based policy-making process.

The OSH Agency also takes this opportunity to remind persons that by Law, the duty to ensure safety resides with you – the employer and employee. Collectively we can achieve safer and more productive workplaces in Trinidad and Tobago.
