Hard Hats and the Human Factor…OSHA attends AMCHAM’s 2024 HSSE Conference and Exhibition

The American Chamber of Commerce of Trinidad and Tobago hosted its annual HSSE Conference and Exhibition on Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th November, 2024. The theme for this year, “Human Factors” focused on the critical role of human behaviour, psychology and culture in creating safe and sustainable workplaces.

There was a kaleidoscope of vendors and organisations present showcasing their goods and services. Among these organisations, was the Occupational Safety & Health Agency. The Communications and Outreach Department as well as the Chief Inspector represented the Agency at the Conference and distributed merchandise as well as interact with attendees regarding any safety and health questions and concerns they had. This is part of the Agency’s outreach campaign and is crucial in its efforts to spread safety and health awareness and education.

Human beings are central to workplace safety and health because their decisions, actions and interactions shape the work environment. Here’s 6 reasons why human beings are critical to the work environment:

  • Decision-making: Workers make daily choices that impact safety, such as following protocols, reporting hazards, and responding to emergencies.

  • Awareness and Adaptability: Humans can identify unusual conditions, adapt to changing circumstances and respond to unforeseen risks more effectively than automated systems.

  • Collaboration: Effective teamwork and communication are essential for identifying hazards, sharing safety information, and promoting a culture of accountability.

  • Leadership: Managers and supervisors set the tone for safety practices through training, policy enforcement, and leading by example.

  • Innovation: Human creativity drives the development of safer practices, tools, and technologies that reduce workplace risks.

  • Empathy and Support: Humans recognize the emotional and physical needs of their co-workers, fostering a supportive environment that prioritizes well-being.

By understanding and addressing human factors like fatigue, stress, and motivation; organisations can enhance safety outcomes and create healthier workplaces. OSHA will continue to work with organisations in order to increase safety and health awareness. The Agency remains committed to protecting the safety and health of all persons in Trinidad and Tobago through sensitisation and enforcement if the OSH Act.
